The Cisco GLC-BX40-D-I, GLC-BX40-DA-I, and GLC-BX40-U-I SFPs run on a single strand of the standard SMF. 1000BASE-BX40-D and 1000BASE-BX40-U for single-fiber bidirectional applications. A GLC-X40-D-I or GLC-BX40-DA-I device connects to a single-strand GLC-BX40-U-I device with a standard SMF transmission range of up to 40 km. Communication over a single fiber strand is accomplished by separating the wavelength of the transmission of the two units.

This function allows the end-user to control the SFP's real-time parameters, such as optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage for the transceiver.
